Four important factors to consider when sowing grass seed

The task of sowing grass seed can seem daunting at first. However, following the right steps, it is the simplest thing to do. In order to learn how best to sow new grass seeds you need to meet certain conditions.

Soil Temperature

The temperature of the soil should not be more than 10 degrees celsius. If it is higher the grass seeds will not germinate. To determine the soil temperature you can use a soil thermometer. For the most accurate results the soil thermometer must be sunk at least 3 cm into the soil.

Soil Moisture

How you water your planted grass seeds matters in the whole process of growing grass seeds. All plants require water for growth. However, one of the most common mistakes people make is not giving plants enough water. During the first couple of weeks you should water the sowed grass seeds every day. Too much water in the soil is also not good for the seeds. Hence, you much practice light watering – enough to keep the soil moist but not drenched.

Types of Grass

There are different types of grass seeds that you can plant on your lawn. They include shade and sun, sport and fun, ornamental and quintessentially manicured English lawns. Moowy can help you get any of these types of grasses for your lawn. Sport and fun grass are mainly for playgrounds, while sun and shade are reserved for shady lawns, ornamental grass is for ornamental lawns and gives a carpet feel.

Timing

It is good to understand when to start sowing grass seeds as this will affect their rate of growth. The most ideal season to sow grass seeds is late summer. This time of the year has enough rain that helps seeds quickly germinate and grow.

What You Need When Sowing Grass Seed

To perform an effective job at sowing grass seed you need to have several important types of equipment. At moowy you can get high-end and durable gardening equipment to satisfy all your grass needs.

  • Rake: a rake is crucial for ensuring optimum contact with the soil. The grass seeds need the soil in order to germinate
  • Lawn Roller: a lawn roller will push the grass seeds into the ground and will ensure they are firmly held in place. This prevents the seeds from being washed away during watering or when it’s raining.
  • You will also need a sod cutter and a garden hose as well
